The Border Artists
A resident of Mesilla, NM, Rosemary McLoughlin was born in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BA from Regis College, MA and taught in Boston and Puerto Rico. In 1967 she was hired to create and direct an art program for grades 1-12 at St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, TN, and while there she studied at the Memphis Academy of Art. In 1974 she spent a semester of art in Italy, where her studies in painting, art history and mosaics took her to Rome, Florence and Venice, as well as Athens, Greece and Paris, France.
She began graduate work at New Mexico State University in 1975 and received a master’s degree in painting in 1977. Since that time she has worked and exhibited in Mesilla and Las Cruces. In 1998 she retired from her position as museum educator at the University Art Gallery, NMSU, to paint full time.
McLoughlin has exhibited in Las Cruces, El Paso and Mexico with the Border Artists. The Las Cruces Museum of Fine Arts gave her a twenty year retrospective in 1997, and she has had several one-woman shows at Glenn Cutter Gallery, Las Cruces. Two of her paintings were included in the So-Q: Artists of Southern New Mexico at the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe. She has received two commissions from the Memorial Medical Center Foundation. McLoughlin’s work can be seen there, at Glenn Cutter Gallery and in the permanent collection of the Branigan Cultural Center/ Museum of Fine Art.
