The Border Artists
Art reflects life. Art becomes life when practiced. Art and life are inseparable.
My work often portrays scenes of singular homes on desolate land, with an occasional bird or two sitting on a telephone wire. These scenes are quiet, executed in muted colors and washed and scrubbed background designs. There is always an element of tension within the picture plain. As if the picture is holding it’s breath.
The idea of holding one’s breath, of waiting for change is seductive. Like electricity in a field. Much of my inspiration comes from that place. It’s a place of daydreams and circus themes, pastel skies and quiet moving clouds. It’s a place where my imagination runs wild over the desert landscape and where I find myself calling home.
The idea of home has become a telling symbol in my latest work. Simple adobe structures and whitewashed buildings become the focal point in many of my paintings. I always paint the exterior, the way the clouds move over the horizon, the little birds sitting on wire. It’s simple, sometimes the way life just is.
Some days the act of painting allows me to experience the simple act of just observing the exterior and seeing light fall on telephone wires. And for that fleeting moment, I hold my breath.
